Vara Denise (Lucas) McClendon, 64, beloved mother and educator of Palm Bay, Florida, passed away June 21, 2025, leaving a void that her family and friends cannot fill.
She was born in Macon, Georgia on April 18, 1961 to Alice (McElroy) Lucas and the late Shedrick Richard Lucas, Sr. She attended Bibb County Public Schools before graduating with a B.S. in Business from Georgia Southern University, where she also became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She went to work for several companies including Cox Cable and Bellsouth before finding her true calling as a teacher at Montessori of Macon, then with a move to Florida continuing at Educational Horizons, Odyssey Charter School and Palm Bay Academy.
Vara was a devoted mother to Aanisah Zaakirah McClendon and Kareem
Ahmad McClendon and loving grandmother to Cameron Christopher Terry and Kymani Ahmad McClendon, her heart and joy.
Vara was preceded in death by her father, Shedrick Richard Lucas Sr. and brother, Shedrick Richard Lucas Jr. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her mother, Alice (McElroy) Lucas, two sisters, Veronica Lucas Nwoke and Tangela Nicole Lucas, her ex- husband Gary Edwin McClendon and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
