Mrs. Refie C. Melvin was born August 17, 1933 in Hemingway, South Carolina to the late Henry James Cooper and Mary Emma Cooper. On January 18, 2023, God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be so He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come to Me.”
Mrs. Melvin was educated in Williamsburg County School system. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Refie had a true love for teaching and spent 37 years doing so. She taught 7 years in South Carolina and 30 years in Georgia, retiring from Bibb County Board of Education in 1995.
Mrs. Melvin was an active member of Steward Chapel A.M.E Church for over 50 years. She served on the Hattie Mitchell Women’s Missionary Society, The Stewardess Board, The Pastor’s Aid Board and The Lay Organization.
Refie enjoyed many hobbies, but she especially loved exercising, shopping, and traveling. Some of the many places she travelled were Alaska, Canada, Paris, and other European cities. Her most recent being Las Vegas at age 87.
Refie was united in holy matrimony to Joseph A. Melvin in 1956 and from this union three children were born; Linda Foster, Joseph Melvin, Jr. and Jarratt K. Melvin, Sr. She was a loving mother who never wavered in her commitment to her children and family.
She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Joseph A. Melvin, Sr.; five brothers and one sister.
Refie leaves to mourn, but cherish her memories; daughter, Linda (Thomas) Foster of Valdosta, GA; two sons, Joseph Melvin, Jr. and Jarratt K. Melvin, Sr. of Warner Robins, GA; five grandchildren, Monique Height (Teheran) of Conyers, GA, LaToya Foster of Byron, GA, Montez Foster of Jacksonville, FL, RaShaun Foster of Valdosta, GA and Jarratt Melvin, Jr. of Warner Robins, GA; nine great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
