Peggie Evans Obituary

Peggie Joyce Respress Evans was born on April 10, 1942, in Crawford County, Georgia, to the late Sarah Marie Jones Dewberry and the late Horace Respress. She was raised in a loving and prayerful family, the cherished granddaughter of Arrie and Zollie Jones. From an early age, Peggie’s warmth, kindness, and strong spirit shone brightly, endearing her to all who knew her. She gained her heavenly wings on January 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and generosity that will never be forgotten.

Peggie accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized as a member of SpringHill Baptist Church, where she nurtured a deep and abiding faith. She was educated in the Crawford County School System and graduated from Crawford County Training School. During her school years, she was a talented and accomplished track and field athlete, known for her speed and determination. Family and friends fondly recall how she and her cousin Tom, a fellow track star, would reminisce about their races, and how their mothers would say, “If you blinked, you’d miss the race!” Her competitive spirit and dedication to excellence carried over into all aspects of her life.

In the summer of 1956, Peggie met the love of her life, Mr. William C. Evans, Sr. Their love blossomed, and on December 30, 1960, they married and began their journey together. In 1965, they relocated to Detroit, Michigan, in search of better opportunities, building a beautiful life for their growing family. Their union was blessed with three wonderful children, and Peggie was a devoted wife and mother, always putting her family's needs before her own. She was a provider in every sense—ensuring her home was filled with love, laughter, and wisdom. Her faith in God and her unwavering commitment to family made her a pillar of strength.

Peggie’s kindness extended beyond her family; she was a loyal friend, a trusted confidante, and a source of comfort to many. Her home was always open, and her heart even more so. Known for her incredible cooking skills, she delighted loved ones with her exceptional baking and culinary creations. Her peach cobbler, sweet potato pies, and home-cooked meals were legendary, making family gatherings even more special. She also had a beautiful singing voice that brought joy to those around her. She cherished simple pleasures, like taking drives to Dickey Farms for fresh peaches and homemade peach ice cream or traveling to Alabama for birthday celebrations with loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her two beloved sisters, Donna Dewberry and Dannette Hollenshed and one brother, Henry Dewberry.

Peggie’s absence will be deeply felt, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. She leaves behind her three devoted children: Mrs. Rhonda (Larry) Davis of Detroit, Michigan; Ms. Tammy Evans of Roberta, Georgia; and Mr. William (Mary) Evans, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren: Ms. Raeshaune Evans of Warner Robins, Georgia, Ms. Ashley Davis of Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Larry T. Davis II of Detroit, Michigan and Mr. DeMarco (Bre) Evans of Warner Robins, Georgia. She also had two cherished bonus grandsons, Micheal Gee and Melvin Gee, and great-grandchildren: Raelin Evans, Lauren Davis, Tamia Evans, Amari Gee, and Savannah Gee. She is survived by her loving siblings, brothers, Jobie C. Davis of Knoxville, Georgia, and Dalton (Rosa) Dewberry and sisters, Mrs. Diana (Johnathan) Colbert of Culloden, Georgia, and Mrs. Deborah (Herman) Colbert of Romulus, Michigan and bonus siblings, Gail Respress, Horace Respress, Jr. and Gregory Respress all of New York City; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Merlene Dewberry of Newman, Georgia, Mrs. Tommie J. Hunter, Mrs. Delores Freeman, Mrs. Julitte Cox of Macon, Georgia, Ms. Margaret E. Thomas of Macon, Georgia, Mrs. Pricilla Evans of Macon, Georgia and Mrs. Clara Murphy of Macon, Georgia; brothers-in-law, Mr. Lawrence Evans of Macon, Georgia, Mr. L.D. (Ruthie Mae) Bentley of Macon, Georgia; two uncles, Mr. Caleb T. Jones and Mr. Cecil Scott of Macon, Georgia. She will be deeply missed, but her influence and love will continue to shine through those she held dear.
