Mattie Ruth “Clyte” Wilcox was born on October 15, 1941, to her beloved parents, Carrie Hearns affectionately known as “Muh” and Horace Truiit. She grew up in LaGrange, Georgia, where she learned the values of family, community, and resilience that would shape her life.
As a young adult, she moved to Macon, Georgia, a place that would become her home and the backdrop to her most cherished memories. It was there that she met the love of her life, her soulmate, Zelb Wilcox. The two were united in marriage in 1960, beginning a beautiful 36 years journey together.
Mattie was a devoted homemaker, pouring her heart into creating a warm, welcoming, and loving home for her family. Her care, her presence, and her steady strength were the foundation on which her family grew.
Mattie passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026. She embraced life with a joyful spirit, a warm heart, and a deep love for the blues. Time spent with friends brought her laughter, comfort, and connection, and she was always ready for a lively game of spades—one of her favorite pastimes.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, and her devoted husband, Zelb Wilcox Sr, with whom she shared decades of love, partnership, and family.
Mattie leaves to cherish her memory two devoted sons, Dwayne Wilcox (Vernetta) and Zelb Wilcox Jr. (Verna). She also leaves her beloved sister, Betty Stokes, brother-in-law, Earnest Covin, along with a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Mattie deeply loved her Green Meadows family and carried countless fond memories of her time living there. The friendships she formed and the community she embraced were a meaningful and joyful part of her life.
Her legacy is one of warmth, resilience, and unwavering love. She will be remembered for the joy she brought to others, the strength she carried with grace, and the kindness she shared so freely. Family and friends will forever hold her memory close.
