Mary Smith Chambliss was born on May 17, 1927, to Lucinda Smith and Will Cole. She received her education in Monroe County, where she laid the foundation for a life marked by hard work, dedication, and unwavering faith. On February 24, 1946, she married Edward Chambliss, and together they built a loving home, blessed with three sons.
Mary was a faithful and devoted member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church from an early age. She actively participated in various church ministries, serving as a Senior Usher, a dedicated member of the Pastor’s Aid Committee, and an integral part of the Mission Ministry. Her faith in God was unwavering, and she spent much of her time serving others, demonstrating a heart full of compassion and grace. She was a source of strength and inspiration to her church family and community, always ready to lend a helping hand or share words of encouragement.
Throughout her life, Mary exemplified a strong work ethic. She was employed at Wesleyan College, Cotton-Harrison Camp, and in the housekeeping industry for over 50 years. Her commitment and perseverance were admired by all who had the privilege of working with her.
Mary was deeply cherished by her family, who loved her immensely. She was a pillar of strength, always offering guidance, support, and unconditional love. Her warm smile, kind words, and selfless spirit created a lasting impact on those around her. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passing down values of faith, resilience, and generosity. Her family will forever treasure the beautiful memories she created with them.
On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Mary departed this life, but her love and legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Chambliss, and her beloved sons, Johnie Chambliss and Jerome Chambliss. She leaves behind a devoted son, Nathaniel (Estella) Chambliss; a loving granddaughter and caregiver, Gwen Chambliss; grandchildren, Nathan (Shendora), Michael, Robin (Dillion), Tabitha (Jura), Nicole (Cedric), Parris (Ashley), Portia, and Malcom (Jasmine); twenty-six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mozella Walker; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends. Mary will be profoundly missed, but the love she shared and the values she instilled in her family will endure for generations to come.
