Maggie Adams Obituary

Mrs. Maggie E. Carswell Durham Adams was born on December 23, 1934, in Wilkinson County, Georgia (Danville), to the late Albert and Viola (Lindsey) Carswell. She was one of thirteen children, the eleventh born into a large and loving family. Maggie was educated in the Wilkinson County public school system, where she began to develop the strong values of faith, perseverance, and compassion that would guide her throughout her life.

At an early age, Maggie met and fell in love with Johnny Durham, with whom she shared a beautiful union. Together, they built a life centered on love, commitment, and family, raising six children. After the birth of their first three children, they later relocated to Macon, Georgia, where they continued to grow their family. Maggie was a devoted mother who made countless sacrifices to ensure her children were cared for, supported, and loved unconditionally. Her life was a living testimony of Proverbs 31:28: “Her children will rise up and call her blessed.”

Maggie’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She joined Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in 1951, where she served faithfully and wholeheartedly for many years. She was an active and dedicated member, working as an usher, singing in the choir, participating in the outreach ministry, and serving on the Mother’s Board. Her commitment to her church and her unwavering faith in God were evident in all that she did, and she remained a source of spiritual strength and encouragement to many.

Throughout her life, Maggie was a hardworking and dependable woman who took pride in her employment. She began her career at Chi-Chester’s Pharmacy, where she worked faithfully for ten years. She later worked at Bibb Mill Manufactures before dedicating 22 years of service to Robins Air Force Base, where she retired in 2004. Maggie’s strong work ethic and dedication were admired by all who knew her, and she carried herself with dignity and grace in every role she held.

Maggie was well known throughout her community as a caring, generous, and kind-hearted woman. She gave freely, whether she had much or little, always willing to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. She was deeply loved by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her presence brought warmth and comfort, and her absence will be deeply felt. Though she has departed this life, her legacy of love, sacrifice, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those she touched.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Durham, Sr.; sons, Johnny Durham, Jr., and Ezekiel Durham; her parents; four brothers, George, Henderson, James and Albert, Jr.; five sisters, Jimmie Lee, Mattie, Annie Lou, Martha and Grace.

She leaves to mourn, Carolyn Lee of Michigan, Eddie Durham, Sr., Vanessa Thomas and Franklin (Lander) Durham; sixteen grandchildren; forty-two great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; three sisters, Sallie Ann, Mary and Evelyn and a host of nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
