Mrs. Jerri Jean Gates, affectionately known as “Jean Bug” was born on October 19, 1951, to the late Lucille Howard and Emmett Williams, Sr. She grew up in Sofkee and Macon, Georgia, where she developed the caring spirit and warm heart that would define her life.
Jerri was a devoted caregiver whose love for children and families was evident to all who knew her. She was a 2nd mom to numerous children throughout the community, ensuring parents could return to work with peace of mind. Jerri made sure every child in her care was clean, well-fed, and well-mannered. She was especially known for lovingly washing and plaiting children’s hair so parents had one less thing to worry about.
Her nurturing presence left a lasting imprint on many families.
In addition to her caregiving, Jerri was an exceptional cook. Family and friends eagerly anticipated her specialties, which included meat loaf, fried chicken, chicken and rice, smothered chicken, and homemade biscuits. She was also known for making a “mean” pineapple upside-down cake that brought smiles to many.
Jerri loved her family and friends deeply and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. Her kindness, generosity, and quiet strength made her a treasured presence in the lives of many.
She attended Bessie Capel and Hamilton Elementary Schools and was a member of the Girl Scouts in her youth. Jerri was a proud and dedicated member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served on the Hospitality Committee and the Matilda Evans Mission Circle. She also supported the church choir by offering babysitting services so parents could attend choir practice without worry.
Jerri was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 35 years, Albert Gates, Jr.; her parents, Lucille Howard and Emmett Williams, Sr.; her sister, Nancy Williams; and her brothers, John Willie Howard, Gary “Deadeye” Spivey, and Emmett Williams, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories three loving and devoted children, Shona Faye Howard, Albert Ramon Gates, and Angel Woodard; a devoted and loving son-in-law, Westhony M. Woodard; five grandchildren, Steven Q. Howard, Crystal D. Jordan, Desthony A. Woodard, Journee Z. Woodard, and Langston R. Gates, sisters, Henrietta “Tippy” (James) Martin and Margaret (Dwight) Evans, a loving neighbor and friend, Kim Watson, 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.
To know Jerri was truly to love her. Her legacy of love, service, and quiet strength will live on in every life she touched.
