Evangelist Ruby M. Hickson, a beloved servant of God, was born on February 21, 1945, in Macon, Georgia, to Missionary Mary Benton Gilbert and Mr. James Cody Benton. She was called home to glory on December 20, 2024, at Macon's Pine Point Hospice Facility.
Evangelist Hickson grew up in Macon, Georgia, alongside her siblings, Evangelist Willie M. Horton and the late Elder Robert J. Benton. A proud graduate of Ballard Hudson High School, Class of 1963, she embarked on a life of faith, family, and service. In 1964, she married Bishop J.L. Hickson and relocated to Spokane, Washington, where her legacy of love and ministry began to flourish.
In Spokane, Evangelist Hickson's melodious voice became a vessel for ministry. She performed at numerous churches and concerts across the United States, Canada and Barbados, including a celebrated Fall Concert at Comstock Park. Her heart for service extended to nursing homes, where she volunteered her time and talents to bring joy through music. The Evangelist and her sister, Evangelist Willie M. Horton, combined their musical gifts for a memorable concert at Flipper Temple AME in Atlanta in 1984.
Professionally, Ruby served in the Spokane and Bibb County School Districts (BCSD), retiring as a Para-Pro for the BCSD. While in Spokane, she co-founded and served as Director of Rock-A-Bye Daycare Center, dedicating nearly a decade to nurturing young minds.
A dedicated member of the National Association of Ministers Wives and Widows, Evangelist Hickson's leadership as local president in Spokane left an indelible mark. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in bringing Mrs. Desmond Tutu to Seattle, a testament to her vision and commitment to ministry.
Her culinary talents were as legendary as her faith. Known for her mouthwatering fried chicken and crowned the "Sweet Potato Soufflé Queen," she created cherished memories around the dinner table for all who knew her.
Evangelist Hickson was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Elder Robert Benton. She leaves to celebrate her life and legacy three devoted children: Bobby Hickson (Spokane, WA), Shelly Hickson-Spruill (Las Vegas, NV), and Lakisha Coons (Macon, GA); six grandchildren: Andrea, Ashley, Tiffany, Davian, Jonathan and Jessica; and two great-grandchildren: Kyree and Kobe. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and numerous friends and in-laws: Rev. Nathan Smith (Marketha), Roy Smith, James Smith, Carrie Smith, Crystal (Rev. George) Taylor, Betty Jean McCarthy, Brenda Benton and Wade Coon.
Evangelist Ruby M. Hickson's life was a testament to faith, love, and service. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her. She fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. May she rest in eternal peace.
