Charlie Fred Johnson was born on Saturday, December 20, 1952, to the loving parentage of Charlie Johnson and Hazel Evans Johnson in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. From an early age, he displayed kindness, warmth, and a strong sense of responsibility that would shape his life and leave a lasting impact on those around him. He was cherished by family and friends for his generous spirit, unwavering support, and deep commitment to his loved ones.
At a young age, Charlie gave his life to Christ and became a devoted member of Damascus Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life, instilling in him strong moral values and a compassionate heart. He remained an active and faithful member, always willing to lend a helping hand and contribute to his community.
Charlie was educated in the Bibb County School System and was a proud graduate of Southwest High School, Class of 1971. His graduating class was particularly historic, as it was the first to complete their education after the integration of schools in the county. His perseverance and dedication to his studies paved the way for many others, and he remained a strong advocate for education and equality throughout his life.
His professional journey was one of commitment and excellence. Charlie was employed with Riverwood International, later known as Graphic Packaging, where he worked diligently for 47 years. Through his hard work and dedication, he rose to the position of Senior Process Control Engineer before his well-earned retirement. His colleagues respected him for his expertise, leadership, and unwavering work ethic, and he formed lifelong friendships during his tenure.
Charlie departed his earthly journey on Saturday, January 18, 2025. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Steven D. Johnson; his parents, Charlie Johnson and Hazel Evans Johnson; his grandparents; and three brothers, Edward Johnson, Harold Johnson, and Michael Johnson.
He leaves behind a devoted and loving wife, Mattie Johnson; his children, Charles Johnson, Antwan Johnson, and Chassity Johnson; his siblings, Brenda (Ronald) Epps, Barbara (Gregory) Vickers, Rosa (Terry) Calhoun, Darryl (Joann) Johnson, and Sharon Johnson (Marion) Winstons; a special grandson, Christopher Smith Jr.; and a host of other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
His legacy of love, faith, and dedication will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
