Bishop Joseph L. Hunt was born on July 18, 1964, to Willie and Leona Hunt in Marlboro, South Carolina. He spent his childhood in Little Rock, South Carolina, where he attended the Dillon School system. Joseph pursued higher education with great determination, earning his undergraduate degree in Education from St. Andrews College. He later achieved a Master’s Degree from Wesleyan College, where he made history as the first man to graduate from the institution. His passion for learning and his commitment to excellence were evident throughout his life.
Joseph was deeply devoted to his faith and was a lifelong member of the Open Door Pentecostal Church. He was ordained as a Bishop and took great joy in his role within the church. One of his greatest passions was teaching Sunday School, where he inspired countless individuals with his wisdom and love for the Scriptures. Joseph’s faith and dedication to God were evident in every aspect of his life, and he served as a role model for his congregation and community. Even as his health declined, he remained steadfast in his faith, always walking with grace and humility.
Beyond his family and faith, Joseph’s contributions to his community were immeasurable. He was a man of integrity and humility who always put others before himself. His warm smile, generous spirit, and ability to make everyone feel valued and loved will be deeply missed. Joseph’s legacy is one of compassion, dedication, and faith—qualities that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Willie and Leona Hunt, as well as his siblings Willie L. Hunt and Sara Hunt. While his passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, his life’s work and the love he shared will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration. Bishop Joseph L. Hunt will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Joseph was cherished by his family, friends, and church community for his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love. He had a special bond with his wife, April Hunt, and their son, Joseph S. Hunt (affectionately known as JoJo). Joseph’s siblings, Franklin J. Hunt, Lucille Hunt Bryant, Judy Hunt, Billy Ray Hunt, and Apostle Solomon Hunt (and his wife, Apostle Arlene Hunt), held him in the highest regard. His special nephews, Chris and Anthony Demery, along with a host of other relatives and friends, will forever treasure his memory and the profound impact he had on their lives.
