Betty J. Thomas Bass was born on July 6, 1944, to the late Morris and Scynnie Thomas in Macon, Georgia. She received her education through the Bibb County School System and graduated from Peter G. Appling High School. From an early age, Betty displayed a strong sense of determination and compassion that would guide her throughout her life.
Betty’s career reflected her dedication and strong work ethic. She was employed at the Macon Hospital and later at Warner Robins Air Force Base, where she was known for her reliability, professionalism, and care for those around her. After relocating to Augusta, Georgia, Betty’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to co-own a daycare center. Her love for children and her nurturing personality made a lasting impact on every child and family she served. She took pride in her work and approached every task with excellence and integrity.
On Friday, November 7, 2025, Betty departed this earthly life for her Heavenly home. She was preceded in death by her sister, Annie Pearl Mathis and her brother, Robert Thomas.
She leaves to cherish her memories a devoted daughter, Detrice Shatteen Dumas; son, William Bass, Jr.; grandchildren, Chase Dumas, Rachel Dumas, Storm Wallace, Baylei Bass and Zachary Bass; three great grandchildren; a long time friend, Rietta Wilder and a host of nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Betty was deeply loved by her family and friends. Betty’s legacy lives on through the love she shared, the lives she influenced, and the example she set of kindness, strength, and devotion.
