Bessie Johnson Obituary

Mrs. Bessie Mae Johnson was born on September 12, 1939, to Eula Hightower Stewart and William Stewart, Sr. in Preston Georgia.

She attended Webster and Bibb County Public Schools where she was a graduate of Ballard Hudson High School in Macon Georgia. She was united in holy matrimony in 1957 to Matthew Johnson Sr.  She dedicated her life to Christ and was baptized at St. Matthews Baptist Church and later became a faithful member of New Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, Reverends Curtis and Bryant Raines, Pastors where she served on the Deaconess Board.

She was an employee with the State of Georgia and retired after 25 years as a Social Worker with the Department of Family and Children Services.

She spent her free time enjoying her favorite hobby – fishing. Her love of fishing developed as a child when she tagged along on fishing trips with her maternal Grandmother; and as she had her own grandchildren, she kept the tradition going by taking them fishing on outings.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eula Hightower Stewart and William Stewart, Sr., daughter, Kathleen Johnson Chaney, son, Matthew Johnson, Jr., sister, Ethel Willis, brother, Willie Stewart, Jr, and granddaughter, Christina Thomas.
