Bernice Mims Patmon of Macon, Georgia departed this life on Friday, March 20, 2026. She was born on June 10, 1939 to the union of Mr. Emory N. Mims, Sr. and Pinkie Jackson Mims in Macon, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Eddie Patmon; four sisters, Vivian Mims, Annie L. Crumbley, Ida Mae Wheeler, and Mozella Thurman; and five brothers, Tommie Mims, Emory N. Mims, Jr., John L. Mims, Harold Mims, and Shepherd D. Mims, Sr.
Bernice attended L.H. Williams Elementary School and graduated from Ballard Hudson High School in 1957. After she graduated from Savannah State College, she served as a Bibb County Educator for 38 years and a Math and Reading Instructor for the Macon Youth Development Center. Her ability to make learning meaningful and fun left a lasting impact on her former students.
Bernice’ s remarkable life was filled with her unwavering faith in God, love for her family, friends, education, music, and community. At an early age, she dedicated her life to the Lord at the New Hope Baptist Church. She was a valued church member for over 50 years, serving as the Choir Lead, a Sunday School Teacher, and a member of various committees, including: the Golden Jubilees’ Club, Senior and Missionary Ministries, Announcement Committee, and the June Birth Month Club. Bernice also served as a member of the Ministry Leaders of Mission in Action, Union Missionary Baptist Educational Association, and the National Congress of Christian Education and she represented New Hope as a delegate at several National Baptist Conventions.
Bernice enjoyed traveling, talking, laughing, and eating good food. She also deeply cared for her community. She volunteered with the Sheriff Department as a Citizen On Patrol (COP), Elaine Lucas Senior Center and TRAID a Bibb County Neighborhood Watch, Central City Chapter #45 Order of the Eastern Star, Rehabilitation Court #1 Heroines of Jericho, and Mary L. Walker Assembly #14 Order of the Golden Circle.
Bernice leaves to cherish her precious memory, two nephews, Shepherd D. Mims, Jr. (Carolyn) and Allen S. Mims; four nieces, Vickie Dixon, Pinkie M. Mims, Theodosia M. Williams (Steven) and Velma C. Roberts, a host of family, step children/grandchildren, neighbors, and friends.
