Bernice Montford was born in Macon, Georgia, on October 7, 1932, to John Sandy and Elnora Montford. She attended Summerfield, a small one-room schoolhouse in Bibb County, where her strong-willed personality quickly became known. A bit of a bully in her younger years, Bernice had a fiery spirit and was never afraid to stand her ground. That boldness, however, met its match one day, which prompted her to take her father’s old rusty gun to school, which didn’t end well.
As time went on, Bernice’s life was filled with laughter, love, and a few adventures along the way. She married a couple of times, and from those unions came her beloved children, Jesse Harvey (deceased) and Estoria Fondren. But it was in March 1968 that her heart found its true companion in Cater Mosley. In her own confident fashion, Bernice took charge of her destiny and asked Cater to marry her—and he happily said “yes.” Both believed their childbearing years were behind them, especially since Cater was convinced he could not have children. To their surprise and joy, their daughter Stella (spouse Julian Hylton) arrived in their first year of marriage, followed by Jo-Bess (spouse James Jenkins) three years later—a story that always brought smiles and laughter to their family, especially their father.
Bernice will be remembered for her strength, her sense of humor, and the deep love she held for her family. She was a woman who lived life boldly and loved deeply—cherished by her children, grandchildren, Genevea and Justin Harvey, Dietrich and Stanton James, Julian and Carly Hylton, Tina and James Jenkins; great grandchildren, Orlando Whitehead Jr., Ormon Whitehead and Christopher Harvey; great-great grandchildren, OrMoni, Legacii, Legend Whitehead, and Orlando Whitehead III and all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of resilience, love, and laughter will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
