Bernice Ralls Lucas

Bernice Ralls Lucas was born on October 5, 1930 to the late Mollie McCowan Ralls and Earnest Ralls, Sr.

She attended school at Pine Grove in Culloden, Georgia as well as Hubbard School in Forsyth, Georgia.

She joined Pine Grove C.M.E. Church of Culloden, Georgia at the age of 12 years old in August 1942 under the leadership of Reverend Simmons.  She was an Usher and Sunday School Teacher in her younger years.  Later she became a Missionary and the “Mother of Pine Grove C.M.E. Church.”

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Lee Lucas of 70 years; two children, Rose M. Lucas Shannon and Hamp Lucas; three grandchildren, Bob Lucas, Jr., Kenyata Lucas and Vincent Owens; four brothers and two sisters.

She was an exceptional wife and a loving mother.  She cared deeply for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other people she met.  Bernice always offered a hug, food and money to the little ones.  She always ensured that every child who crossed her threshold was safe and healthy; she never forgot them.

Bernice was a wife and mother who rose every morning at 5:30 AM to cook breakfast for her loved ones.  Even when she was in good health, she ensured that dinner was always prepared.  She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was.  A strong and faithful woman who knew the Lord.

On October 29, 2023, Bernice transitioned peacefully at her home, at the age of 93, after a brief illness surrounded by her loved ones providing comfort and support during her final moments.  

She lived a remarkable life filled with love, joy and countless cherished memories.  Her warmth, kindness, and wisdom touched the lives of everyone she encountered.  She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Memories will last always as the love that God has abided in us will never go unnoticed.  I am and will be with you always.

Mrs. Lucas is survived by her children, Christine (Howard) Bishop, Andrew James Lucas, John Thomas Lucas, Bob (Sarah Jane) Lucas, Dorothy Lucas and Gary (Patricia) Lucas; grandchildren, Tammy (Reggie) Matlock, LaKeisha (Raynard) Shannon, Junika Owens, Andre Lucas, Sabrina Lucas, Rodrigus (Paulette) Lucas, Adrian Lucas, Tamekia Watts, Ronnie Watts, Andrew D. Watts and Breyata Lucas; three sisters, Annie Laura Brown, Anna Jo Ralls and Elzie Kate Douglas; one brother, Earnest Ralls, Jr.; a devoted son-in-love, Robert Johnson, Jr.; a devoted god daughter, Mattie P. Fuller; a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
